Learn How To Breakdown Scripts
Ā
Before you begin designing a film, you need to understand the scope of the script.
The Set Breakdown is your first step in creating the world of the story.
Why I designed this course for you
As a film designer you must discover and understand the scope of the story. How big is the 'world' of the story? How many sets are there to design? What kind of budget do I need to achieve this productions requirements? The set breakdown is one of those things that's not often taught in film schools and is something that people often have to learn on the job. This course will give you a head start when you begin your career.
The Result
You will be able toĀ understand the physical requirements of the story and the design challenge presented by the film that you've been asked to create. This will be the document with which you'll discuss various production needs with other departments, budget each set or location, and plan for how the project will be shot.

What You'll Learn in thisĀ Course
Until now, no one has created a class that explains creating a complete Set Breakdown to designers.
You'll be guided through creating your first set breakdown. Using an actual feature script and with the help of script reports you'll learn the proper way to complete a breakdown that will not only help you to organize the designs needed for the project but will help you understand aspects of the story that you may have missed during the first read-through of the script.
What you'll learn:Ā
-
The materials include an unproduced feature-length script, a set of nine script reports that you'll refer to while completing the breakdown, both a blank Excel breakdown form and one that has been partially completed. There is a video that explains the process and leads you in steps through the breakdown, pointing out possible challenges and giving you tips on avoiding problems that may not show up until midway into the pre-production phase of a film.
The storyline covers both a current day environment as well as a historical time period and points out the challenges of having scenes which will have sets that will need to be designed and dressed to work for different time periods.
Ā You get:
Ā
- Full-length unproduced feature script
- 8 reports which separate the script into categories by story order, set name, and occurrence
- A blank Excel document, pre-formatted for your breakdown
- A partially completed breakdown to help you understand the system
- A video that describes the process and guides you through a breakdown of the script

"The Set Design Fundamentals Series was an invaluable part of my Art Department education. It answered my questions about working full-time as a Set Designer and making a career in the entertainment industry. I learned so much about the tools, practices, and technical skills necessary for a successful start in film and TV. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and would recommend it to anyone looking to further their design skills.

"When I started the 12-Week Set Design Fundamentals Series class, I was hoping to learn about the drawings that a Set Designer needs to produce, but I learned much more. This course covered everything: drawings, how to do a site survey, what the set designer's responsibilities are, and their position in the Art Department. My favorite part was learning about what not to do as a set designer. Learning from others' mistakes made me feel more confident in my work process. I started a Set Design job shortly after finishing the class. The class helped me do my first job with confidence. This class is a perfect start for anyone who is beginning a career in Set Design."

"This is an amazing course taught by an industry pro. Randall is an excellent, kind, and patient teacher who somehow manages to cover everything from the construction of a single flat to measuring a cathedral in Florence from just photos. I cannot speak highly enough about this class. Anyone who is serious about a career in set design should be required to take this course.
